Last night Craig Johnson took the New York State Senate seat in the seventh district for the Democrats. It was a tremendous victory for the local blogosphere, that little portion of Long Island and ultimately the whole of New York.
The supposed 'red' district ending up going for Johnson, 26,452 votes to O'Connell's 22,929. Not exactly a nail-biter if you know what I mean. This happened for a number of reasons. Residents of the seventh are sick of the politics-as-usual up in Albany. They demanded a change and got one from Craig. His positions on issues in New York spoke to the voters and they responded en masse.
Another reason is the emerging power of the blogosphere. With sites like The Albany Project leading the way, enormous amounts of money was raised and the message was spread far and wide. Even NY political all-stars like Governor Spitzer wanted to join in the action that the blogosphere had generated. But you don't have to believe me, just listen to Dave Pollak, Craig Johnson's victorious campaign manager.
