Rep. Jim Walsh is moderate Republican representing the Rochester area for some time now. He has been a supporter of the President's war in Iraq up until he took the time to go over there and see the situation for himself (for the second time in four years). Unlike the narrowly-scoped picture General Petraeus has painted for Congress, Mr. Walsh got an up close and personal look on the ground and abruptly changed course on his support for the occupation.
From The Democrat and Chronicle:
"Before I went, I was not prepared to say it's time to start bringing our troops home," Walsh said. "I am prepared to say that now. It's time."Walsh's announcement came as Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, told House members that the troop "surge" has made progress.
But Walsh said he saw little evidence that much has changed in Iraq since he last visited four years ago. He said he hopes to meet with President Bush to convey his change of heart.
Obviously Bush will be disappointed by the press generated over this but if Walsh thinks it will sway the Decider, he definitely does not know the delusions George suffers. Remember, he'll be content to stay in this even if his wife and dog abandon him. At least we have one more Republican coming back from the dark side on this issue and into the light of reality and common sense. Now for the rest of them.....
