Bloomberg Courts GOP Leaders While Mentioning Obama In Robocalls

Not surprisingly, Michael Bloomberg is making nice with leaders of the local Republican party so that he gets a nice spot on the ballot this fall. That is an important part of the early campaign, especially being that the mayor has no party at the moment. What is surprising is his early use of robocalls. I personally find them distasteful and one of the least effective ways to build repoire with voters. The style doesn't matter here so much though, it is what he's saying on them that do.

Here’s the robocall Michael Bloomberg’s campaign is putting out, telling people how “the mayor endorsed President Obama’s health care reform.”

The call – which was provided to me by Bloomberg’s campaign - goes on to say, “Like President Obama, Mayor Bloomberg says it’s time to put politics aside” and reform health care. It then directs people to an official federal web site dealing with the issue.

Bloomberg is nothing like Barack Obama. One is a solid Democrat and the other is an "independent" aristocrat. Of course that won't stop the party-playing mayor from trying to connect himself to the President. Yet to pull that type of maneuver while trying to gain the favor of the GOP for their ballot line is just a bit ballsy.

NY Repubs Try To Trick Upstaters To Vote Obama And State Senate GOP

The Republican Party in New York aren't stupid, but they certainly think some upstate voters are dumb. In the hotly contested seat previously held by Republican Mary Lou Rath, the robocalls are getting very deceptive. The GOP knows New York is going a deep, dark blue for Obama, but State Senate races are a little murkier thanks to less media coverage. So what does the tricksters at the GOP do?

A Buffalo reader wrote in to say that residents in upstate SDs where there are competitive races are reporting receiving robocalls that urge them to vote for Barack Obama for president and also for the Republican candidate for Senate.

No recordings yet (send them if you've got 'em, please). But the script in the 61st SD, where Democrat "Baby" Joe Mesi is fighting Republican Michael Razenhofer for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Mary Lou Rath is as follows:

"Tomorrow's election is critical for our future, I'm calling to ask you to go out and vote for Obama for president and Ranzenhofer for state Senate."

Similar calls were reported in the 58th SD, where Republican Dennis Delano is trying to oust Democratic Sen. Bill Stachowski.

So much for party loyalty with McCain, to the state GOP, it is all about holding on to the power they still have. Of course, they can't really do that with their record on the issues in the state, so they have to resort to a vain attempt that tries to fool Obama supporters into voting Republican.

Get away from John McCain's vicious robocalls (especially if you are in a swing state) and help Obama make real-live calls from actual people to undecided voters and others to help get out the vote this weekend through election day!

Robo McCain Slimes Obama Over Health Care Plan

John McCain has significantly increased his robo-call attacks on Barack Obama. Perhaps it is cheaper to reach people than spending millions on advertising, but what is in those calls is becoming more and more disturbing. The latest one tries to say that Obama will slow the development of life-saving drugs even though nothing of the sort is mentioned.

...because Barack Obama and the Democrats have jeopardized our Medicare and Social Security with their proposed massive government takeover of health care, and will be reducing access to doctors and slowing development of life-saving drugs. Don't let the inexperience and poor judgement of Barack Obama and his Democrat allies put our livelihood at risk. This call was paid for by the Republican National Committee and McCain-Palin 2008 at 866 558-5591.

It's pretty craftily worded. Note how the call insinuates that Obama and Dems will slow development of life saving drugs in addition to passing their plan, as if that's actually an Obama policy goal. That's a twist on the stock GOP line, which is that the plan itself would have that effect.

The Huffington Post first got word of this call from readers, and we just obtained the call from a reader in Wisconsin.

As the days before the election grow shorter, the attacks are and will become nastier. The reality is that while the conservative base would like to see medical advances from embryonic stem cells eliminated, Democrats want to continue those amazing discoveries and fully fund science programs so that we can remain competitive in scientific and technological breakthroughs in the future. As for Medicare and Social Security, McCain would reduce Medicare benefits and his goal of privatizing Social Security would have put the system in severe distress due to the perilous situation in the markets.
