Some Adulterous Behavior Is Better Than Others

Tom DeLay, former Majority Leader and master hypocrite is up to his usual antics in a highly unusual way. He spoke up about adultery the other day, both about his own, Bill Clinton's and the Speaker of the House at the time, Newt Gingrich. He proclaims that his adultery wasn't as bad as Newt's while the impeachment proceedings were going on because he wasn't having an affair at the time. Well Tom, in that case, I guess you are the better man (*cough, cough*).

In the book, DeLay criticizes Gingrich for, among other things, conducting an affair with a Capitol Hill employee during the 1998 impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. (The woman later became Gingrich’s third wife.) “Yes, I don’t think that Newt could set a high moral standard, a high moral tone, during that moment,” DeLay said. “You can’t do that if you’re keeping secrets about your own adulterous affairs.” He added that the impeachment trial was another of his “proudest moments.” The difference between his own adultery and Gingrich’s, he said, “is that I was no longer committing adultery by that time, the impeachment trial. There’s a big difference.” He added, “Also, I had returned to Christ and repented my sins by that time.”

In fact, DeLay speaks of Gingrich with undisguised contempt. “He’s got this new shtick now—‘solutions,’ he calls it, like government is the new solution. Government isn’t the solution; it’s the problem.” DeLay smiled. “Did you see that he had a love match with John Kerry on global warming?” he said. “That’s not going to help him with the Presidential race.”

Well, well. As long as you have returned to Christ, then that makes it all okay (in your own mind). Even now that he is out of the House, under indictment and promoting a pathetic little book, the man cannot stop being his hypocritical self. Newt may not be able to set any kind of moral tone, but that does not give DeLay the right to criticize him without atoning for his own misdeeds. The fact is they are both amoral Republican scumbags....and that pretty much sums it up.

Hypocrisy Alert: DeLay To Head Ethics Seminar

I kid you not, this is for real. Tom DeLay was asked to speak about campaign ethics by the Campaigns and Elections Seminar. I'm sure he'll be talking about his "No Retreat, No Surrender" book and how he is really the victim because others want to hold him accountable for his 'alleged' criminal actions as Majority Leader. Tom continues to stay in the news with stunts like this, enabling him to push his book and of course with a possible trial to hold him accountable for his actions.

DeLay, a.k.a. "the Hammer," is set to kick off a May 31 Campaigns & Elections seminar, where he will hawk his book, "No Retreat, No Surrender," and talk political strategy ... and, who knows, maybe even ethics. (After all, Michael Scanlon, a former top DeLay aide who pleaded guilty in the Abramoff lobbying investigation, delivered his graduate thesis on congressional ethics last year; so why shouldn't the Hammer be able to join in the absurdity of it all?)

A witty, lampoony e-mail invitation from Campaigns & Elections reads: "Due to strong language (e.g. going negative, oppo, scandal) and adult situations (e.g. networking, politics, education) the Campaigns & Elections political training seminar is not intended for everyone. Some programming will include former Congressman and DCCC Chairman Vic Fazio, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, political strategist Joe Trippi and gratuitous depictions of successful campaigns, explicit discussions of ethics and an extreme passion for politics."

The invitation warns: "Attend at your own risk!"

At least they see some humor in their conference. Still, giving a platform to the schmuck is like feeding the animals at the zoo. The sign says not to, but people still throw scraps in the cage to get a personal show from the lion, tiger or bear. DeLay needs to be released into the wild, you know, like the general population at a Federal prison.

Nazi Name Games

One of the most atrocious political leaders in recent times was Adolf Hitler. Stalin, Pol Pot and others are on the list. Yet Hitler is the most notorious for World War II and the holocaust of the Jews. Although that terrible time ended more than 60 years ago, people still evoke his name in the divisive political climate of today.

Dick Durbin was excoriated two years ago for comparing Guantanamo Bay to the camps of Hitler and Stalin by the Right Wing Noise Machine. The wingnuts made the statements into a huge deal, ultimately (and sadly) forcing the senior Illinois Senator to apologize for calling American torture policy into question. However when one of their own does it such as the notorious Tom Delay, the statements are quickly swept under the rug.

In this case the comparison is much more direct. In Tom's latest book, he compares the 'lies' of Democrats to the lies the Nazis perpetrated against the Jews. Of course Tom has yet to be acquitted by a jury other than his dwindling supply of sycophants. Nevertheless, he continues to open that ugly mouth of his.

The book, “No Retreat, No Surrender,” has generated a bunch of press, but it’s clear that Jewish Democratic activists haven’t read it. Or else they would have jumped all over this graff…

“I believe it was Adolf Hitler who first acknowledged that the big lie is more effective than the little lie, because the big lie is so audacious, such an astonishing immorality, that people have a hard time believing anyone would say it if it wasn’t true. You know, the big lie — like the Holocaust never happened or dark-skinned people are less intelligent than light-skinned people. Well, by charging this big lie” — that DeLay violated campaign-finance laws in Texas — “liberals have finally joined the ranks of scoundrels like Hitler.”

Shame on Tom for even trying to insinuate that Democrats are like Hitler. Adolf was a fascist of the worst kind that spread hateful messages about the Jews and other minorities in German society. Those messages of the 1920s and 30s turned into one of the worst human tragedies of the 20th century. That hate wiped out half of my own family in Germany, Poland and Hungary. The holocaust is serious business in my family and many others that have had their families brutally massacred by the Nazis. For anyone to give that man a single shred of credibility when it comes to deciding who tells the truth or not is simply insane.

Hillary Has An Ego Problem

Hear ye, hear ye, the candidate to beat is Hillary, so says Hillary. Actually Hillary remarked that Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay have said she is the top Democratic dog in 2008. Well isn't that informative, because to believe your political enemies is always the correct strategy in these times.

It was a roundabout endorsement, to be sure, but Hillary Rodham Clinton Sunday cited none other than White House political adviser Karl Rove to make her case that she is the most electable Democrat in 2008.

Campaigning in New Hampshire, Clinton claimed that she -- and her husband, the former president -- are the Democrats that Rove and other leading Republican handicappers fear most.

"I know what Gingrich tells people privately, I know what DeLay tells people privately, I know what Karl Rove tells people privately," she said. "I'm the one person they are most afraid of. Bill and I have beaten them before, and we will again."

It is so amusing to find these stories where the candidate is completely trapped in a bubble and loves to hear great things about themselves all the time. It is tragic however, when your supposed adversaries are whispering these sweet nothings in your ear and you happily believe every single word. To be fair, if the devil was wearing a red dress I would believe her too...unless she wears Prada, then I run really fast.

Republicans Fall Like A House Of Cards

Something that looked so big and powerful when it swept into office twelve years ago is now nothing but an illusion. Last November's 'thumpin' by the Democratic party crushed Bush's failed agenda. Of course the Do-Nothing 109th Congress hardly got anything passed for the President. Bush didn't take that lying down however, he just ruled with his iron-coated fist. The President simply made 'laws' as he went, telling the American people about it on occasion if it seemed necessary to cover his ass. The loser in his trek was the United States, its citizens and the constitution which our great nation was founded on.

Now we enter a new era with the beginning of the Democratic-controlled 110th Congress. The Republicans are fracturing worse than fault lines in East Asia. Democrats are cruising through Speaker Pelosi's 100 hours plan, passing much needed reform that can help our country regain its footing at home. In addition to the necessary reforms, the Congress is renewing its commitment to provide checks and balances on the Executive branch. Oversight and accountability can be seen with the likes of the tenacious Sen. Webb, Rep. Waxman and many others.

Now that the party of the people is in charge, the once formidable Republican caucus is in tatters. Many Republicans crossed party lines to vote for Democratic bills, often providing veto-proof majorities. The long, dark shadows of men like Dennis Hastert and Tom DeLay have been crushed by the powerful light that the Democratic leadership is showing. One hundred hours has not even passed (in legislative time) and so much has been done already, with so much more hope and reform to come.
