From The Birmingham News:
Shelby County poll workers say they are surprised by the number of Democratic ballots being cast in the state's most Republican county.[...]At Siluria Baptist Church in Alabaster, 672 people had voted by 2:30, a turnout that poll inspector Rebecca Kent said was higher than usual. There, 188 voters chose Democratic ballots.
Siluria Baptist election official Judy Acker said it was usually much more heavily Republican.
How much more Republican? Shelby County voted for Bush four years ago by a margin of 81-19. How about them apples, eh.
Putting one county aside however, the victory really is in the big picture. People turned out in record numbers from the American Samoa to Massachusetts to vote for a Democratic candidate. Now I'm not saying this is comparable to voting in the primary of a Congressional seat in Brooklyn where you know that primary day is the only decision day that counts. Yet the enthusiasm shown by Democratic voters is truly inspiring.
